Today I hung out with Jen Simmons. Follow us as we take her awesome dog, Bear, for a walk. I decided it was high time to do a real “navlopomoish” video. Mentioned: David Howell, Clintus McGintus, Yackpacking on Rupert’s site, and why dogs don’t Twitter.

Hell yeah, they were too cool for us!

Point the camera at you then people get to know you. Then they hire you?
Well shit. Who’d have thought?

Lauren! I was on Yackpack the other night. Great to hear your voice. Afraid I was one of the ones who left. But not because I was “too cool” to speak to your wonderful self. I’m far from “too cool”. : ) I left because it was 2:30 a.m. in London and I was on the point of collapse. But it was great, chaotic fun while it lasted!
Bear is so gorgeous. My kinda dog. Thanks for the walk and great to see your face. I’m still at the hiding behind the camera stage. But one day…

I loved this. Yes. Now I know where Bear goes walking. Bear’s twitterfeed: Door open! Running out! I smelled things! I pooped! Home again. Now I get cookie!

P.S. I understand about not being into talking head videos. But on the other hand, people and their stories are what compels me the most. The videos that are overly artsy with no discernible story hook leave me cold. They don’t engage. Maybe a compromise would be to add your voice?

P.P.S. My postscript was not meant to indicate that your non-talking head videos are overly artsy and leave me cold - it was a generalization.

Yes. Bear’s twitterfeed is at http://twitter.com/barringtonbear. He only subscribes to follow people he actually knows, but you can subscribe to follow him.

Bear is awesome.

@robert No worries, I was just joking and realized it was pretty late for people in certain other time zones. It was lovely getting to talk to you also (and everyone else)!
@all We should all definitely do that again sometime…have a party on someone’s page. Although randomly getting drawn into yackpacking is pretty nifty.

@cheryl I agree that people create the pull and story for many videos. But I also love crazy experimental stuff and showing moments both abstractly and realistically–guess that’s the film school part of me. I love stuff like pouringdown.tv–”artsy” but to me, still a lot of heart, even the ones without voiceovers. I like how vlogging can take so many forms–”mundane” talking-head stuff to abstract-as-hell and back again.

Bear needs his own vlog.
Huge agreement with Lauren about the many form of vlogging being a big positive. There is a freedom in this realm missing from so many film/video genres and subcultures.

Oh my goodness is that an adorable dog!

Oh, watching this now, 10 months later, makes me sad. Bear doesn’t bounce around like that anymore. He’s gotten old and his legs aren’t as good. I can’t walk him off-lease these days, because he can’t hear me and so won’t follow my voice commands.
He does have the same great smile.
[Reply]
@jen oh no, that is so sad!
I will always remember Bear as he was during the “Temple” years. It was hard watching my cat - who had been in my family since I was 8 - start to have problems.
He does have the best attitude + smile.
I’m so glad I shot + posted this seemingly random, inconsequential video as an archive of that time…one of the greats uses / effects of vlogging.

what kind of dog is this?
i want one.

He’s a mut. Part Chow. Part a bunch of other dogs…. or / some people call this kind of dog a Chow Retriever, because he’s got a lot of retriever in him. He’s friendly like a retriever, but just wants to lay around like a Chow. And he’s a great guard dog when needed.

I can definitely see the chow in this dog, as I also have a chow mutt. I have to say, it’s quite nice that they’re so timid and mild. Very cute!
